As Smithsonian Folkways Music of Indonesia illustrates vividly, the archipelago known as Indonesia contains a vast array of music. This album takes a somewhat less academic approach to the styles than the labels other collections. While theres gamelan from CBMW, and a classic song from Waldjinah/Gesang, theres also a great deal of pop styles, especially dangdut, which has become the national popular music, borrowing from both Arab pop and Indian film to create silky, mellifluous grooves as exemplified by Rhoma Irama, Sandii, and 3 Mustaphas 3 bassist Sabah Habas Mustapha. But burrow deeper in this collection and theres Grup Bamba Puang, whose guitar styling could have come from Appalachia, or the entrancing (if odd to Western ears) sound of Ibu Maimunah Mochtar and Group. While its impossible to cram everything onto one disc, this does an excellent job of showing some musical facets of Indonesia.

Like the Bear Family sets that include every available recording of an artist, this two-disc collection finally presents every known track Muddy Waters recorded for the Aristocrat and Chess labels from 1947 to 1952. Since Waters was such a vital architect of the Chicago blues sound, its an indispensable historical and educational document, as well as a wonderful listening experience. The mono sound, remastered in 2000, is clean, crisp, and remarkably vibrant considering the age of these masters, and the liner notes, pictures, and track documentation in the 16-page booklet are enlightening, professional, and complete. Brought to Aristocrats attention by Sunnyland Slim who accompanies Waters on the earliest sides here, Muddy quickly established himself as an important and talented artist in his own right. Even the first recordings from 1947 show the guitarist/vocalist/songwriter as confident, mature, and, above all, driven, with his songs focused and tightly constructed. The majority of the tracks on disc one feature Waters with accompaniment from only bassist Earnest "Big" Crawford and prove what an astonishingly inventive slide guitarist Muddy was, even at this fresh-faced stage in his career. Little Walter adds his distinctive harp to increase the band to a trio, but percussion doesnt appear until about three-quarters through this album when Leonard Chess beats a rudimentary bass drum on four songs recorded in July 1951.

Kansas 2000 album Somewhere to Elsewhere is notable because its the first recording by the original six members in almost 20 years. Joining vocalist Steve Walsh, guitarist Richard Williams, vocalist/violinist Robby Steinhardt, longtime bassist Billy Greer, and drummer Phil Ehart are original guitarist/keyboardist Kerry Livgren and original bassist Dave Hope.

This great album compiles Eddy Grant’s greatest hits and also offers some excellent 12-inch dance remixes of his best songs. Not only does Grant have a talent for catchy tunes, but his lyrics are very intelligent, often having a message of some sort as in the song about democracy in South Africa called Gimme Hope Joanna.

It may be a budget-line, ten-track collection, but Sonys Super Hits is pretty much the definitive retrospective on the pop-metal quartet Firehouses career. The disc wisely concentrates on the groups first two records, 1991s Firehouse and 1992s Hold Your Fire, which was when the band was at the peak of their popularity. All their hits from these two records are here -- "Dont Treat Me Bad," "Love of a Lifetime," "All She Wrote," "Reach for the Sky," and "When I Look Into Your Eyes" -- except for "Sleeping With You," which just barely scraped the charts at the height of grunge-mania. The other half of the record is devoted to album tracks, including selections from the little-heard Firehouse 3 and Good Acoustics. They might not be as memorable as the hits, but theyre pleasant hair metal in the same vein. Truth be told, this music works best as nostalgia for anyone who came of age during the early 90s -- those who remember slow dancing to "Love of a Lifetime" or waving their lighters to power ballads from Slaughter and White Lion -- and anyone who is of that mindset will likely enjoy this concise and rather thorough compilation.
