Isaac Stern:

Known as one of the leading violinists of the 20th century, Isaac Stern has played for symphonies and orchestras and has performed many concerts and recitals. For more than five decades, Stern has used his musical genius to entertain audiences worldwide.

Born in Russia in 1920, Stern is considered an American violinist. His parents brought him to America when he was ten months old. He grew up in San Francisco and was educated in the public school system. His musical career began at eight when he was given violin lessons at home. He eventually came to be taught by Naourn Blinder, the conductor of the San Francisco Symphony. At the age of 13, Stern played his first recital.

In 1936, Stern made his first professional debut with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. The nationally broadcast concert was the Brahms Violin Concerto with Pierre Monteux as the conductor. Following his debut, he played at the Town Hall in New York in 1937, and finally at Carnegie Hall in 1943. For three decades, Stern traveled nationwide performing solo and with symphonies and orchestras. In 1961, he formed a trio with cellist Leonard Rose and pianist Eugene Istomin.

After first finding acclaim as a member of the Steve Miller Band, singer/songwriter Boz Scaggs went on to enjoy considerable solo success in the 1970s. Born William Royce Scaggs in Ohio on June 8, 1944, he was raised in Oklahoma and Texas, and while attending prep school in Dallas met guitarist Steve Miller. Scaggs joined Millers group the Marksmen as a vocalist in 1959, and the pair later attended the University of Wisconsin together, where they played in blues bands like the Ardells and the Fabulous Knight Trains.

Scaggs returned to Dallas alone in 1963, fronting an R&B unit dubbed the Wigs; after relocating to England, the group promptly disbanded, and two of its members -- John Andrews and Bob Arthur -- soon formed Mother Earth. Scaggs remained in Europe, singing on street corners. He also recorded a failed solo LP in Sweden, 1965s Boz, before returning to the U.S. two years later. Upon settling in San Francisco, he reunited with Miller, joining the fledgling Steve Miller Band; after recording two acclaimed albums with the group, Children of the Future and Sailor, Scaggs exited in 1968 to mount a solo career. With the aid of Rolling Stone magazine publisher Jann Wenner, Scaggs next secured a contract with Atlantic. Sporting a cameo from Duane Allman, 1968s soulful Boz Scaggs failed to find an audience despite winning critical favor, and the track "Loan Me a Dime" later became the subject of a court battle when bluesman Fenton Robinson sued (successfully) for composer credit. After signing to Columbia, Scaggs teamed with producer Glyn Johns to record 1971s Moments, a skillful blend of rock and R&B which, like its predecessor, failed to make much of an impression on the charts.

Joan Baezs first album was released in 1960 and it was a revelation. Here was an angelic-looking, dark-haired 19-year-old singing ancient songs, most of them drawn from the Child Ballads, a set of 305 numbered ballads from England and Scotland (and several American variants) collected by Francis James Child in the late 19th century, with a soprano voice so pure and mesmerizing that it appeared as timeless as a voice in an elegant and graceful dream. She made ancient love and murder ballads seem like cool and serious business, and without Baez as a virginal-looking poster girl, the commercial end of the urban folk revival of the early 60s might never have gotten off the ground. This release includes a remastered version of that first album and adds in Folksingers Round Harvard Square, Baezs first actual record, which features her singing solo on six songs, as part of a duo with Bill Wood on four songs, and as part of a trio with Wood and Ted Alevizos on another song. The bonus set originally appeared on LP in 1959 from the little Veritas Records label and was intended as an introduction to the Cambridge, Massachusetts folk scene that was just beginning to flourish at the time. Paired like this, one realizes that Baez just didn’t suddenly appear from the heavens after all when her official album came out a year later, but that her approach and stage presence had been artfully formed and nurtured in the Cambridge folk clubs.

Bread was one of the most popular pop groups of the early 70s, earning a string of well-crafted, melodic soft rock singles, all of which were written by keyboardist/vocalist David Gates. A session musician and producer, Gates met in 1968 guitarist/vocalist James Griffin, who had already released a solo album called Summer Holiday. Griffin hired Gates to produce a new album, and the pair soon became a group, adding guitarist/vocalist Robb Royer from the band Pleasure Fair, who Gates had produced early in its career.

Bread released a total of five albums during their original lifetime, and these are all collected here. After a breakup, they did one additional reunion album, Lost Without Your Love, which was inferior to the original string, and which is not included.
