#1: Bob Dylan - The Very Best of Bob Dylan (2000)
Bob Dylan - The Very Best of Bob Dylan (2000)
Original Year: 2000| Release Date: Jan 01, 2008 | EAC Rip / FLAC(tracks - cue - log) / Covers | 980 MB
Genre: Rock, Folk | Label: Sony
This two-disc collection of folk/rock legend Bob Dylans music features 32 classic songs, including his most recent single, "Things Have Changed."
This Swedish edition includes one bonus track, a live recording of "Things Have Changed."
It is difficult to determine a "best-of" Bob Dylan collection. He was never comfortably a singles artist, even though his hit from the summer of 1965, "Like a Rolling Stone," was one of the most important and influential singles ever released and its follow up that fall, "Positively 4th Street," made it appear that Dylan was going to have a long career at the top of the pop charts. His songs frequently were hits, usually by other artists, from the Byrds to Jimi Hendrix, but Dylan himself never hit the Top Ten singles chart after 1965. His albums, however, were cultural events, and it is nearly impossible to pick just a single song or two from the best of them (Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde on Blonde, John Wesley Harding, Blood on the Tracks), as is the case here, with just "Tangled Up in Blue" included from Dylans 1975 confessional masterpiece, Blood on the Tracks, for example. So, having explained why it is impossible to truly have a two-disc, best-of Bob Dylan set, this collection does get a few things right, starting with the sequence, which is chronological, allowing a glimpse of the evolution of this groundbreaking songwriter. Also, several wonderful songs that were buried in lesser, later albums are given fresh light here, including "Changing of the Guard" from 1978s Street Legal, "Every Grain of Sand" from 1981s Shot of Love, and the mock-epic "Brownsville Girl" from 1986s Knocked out Loaded. Although it was issued as a single, it is hard to justify "Silvio" as one of Dylans best, however, by any criteria. The album closes with the wry "Things Have Changed" from the Wonder Boys soundtrack, which has been interpreted by many as a kind of summing-up of his long career. If you absolutely need a best-of Bob Dylan collection, this will do, but you really need the individual albums to fairly access the growth and vision of this one-of-a-kind pop artist. ~ Steve Leggett

In 2008, Rolling Stone ranked him number 33 in the 100 Best Singers Of All Time.
#16: The Yardbirds - The Very Best Of The Yardbirds (2005)
The Yardbirds - The Very Best Of The Yardbirds (2005)
Release: 2005 | Track: 20 | Format: MP3 CBR 320 Kbps | Size: 151 MB
Genre: Rock | Label: Metro
The Yardbirds are mostly known to the casual rock fan as the starting point for three of the greatest British rock guitarists: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page. Undoubtedly, these three figures did much to shape the groups sound, but throughout their career, the Yardbirds were very much a unit, albeit a rather unstable one. And they were truly one of the great rock bands; one whose contributions went far beyond the scope of their half dozen or so mid-60s hits ("For Your Love," "Heart Full of Soul," "Shapes of Things," "Im a Man," "Over Under Sideways Down," "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago"). Not content to limit themselves to the R&B and blues covers they concentrated upon initially, they quickly branched out into moody, increasingly experimental pop/rock. The innovations of Clapton, Beck, and Page redefined the role of the guitar in rock music, breaking immense ground in the use of feedback, distortion, and amplification with finesse and breathtaking virtuosity. With the arguable exception of the Byrds, they did more than any other outfit to pioneer psychedelia, with an eclectic, risk-taking approach that laid the groundwork for much of the hard rock and progressive rock from the late 60s to the present.
Formed: 1963 in Surrey, England
Disbanded: Jul 1968 in London, England
#17: Imagination - The Very Best of Imagination (2000)
Imagination - The Very Best of Imagination (2000)
Release: 2000 | Track: 16 | Format: MP3 320 Kbps | Size: 175 MB
Genre: Disco, R&B, Punk
His Very Best of Imagination, released in 2000 by the U.K.s Music Club, is the best introduction to the clubby R&B groups work. Not to be confused with the 1998 release of the same title from BR, which is two-thirds the same selection-wise, this holds a slight edge over the several other Imagination anthologies with a smarter crop of inclusions. Like most of the other Imagination anthologies, this one concentrates on material from the groups first three albums, when they were at their peak both artistically and commercially. There are no glaring omissions, and all seven minutes of "So Good, So Right" are rightfully included, so this one gets the nod.
