Brooklyn, 1975: two brothers looking for a way out of their working-class neighborhood make a pact to rob a local theater on the night of a Rolling Stones concert.

(Hayden Christensen), and brothers Jake (Michael Ealy) and Jesse (Chris Brown) Attica successfully complete their latest heist and lead a life of luxury while planning their next job. When Ghost (Tip T.I. Harris), a former member of their team, is released from prison he convinces the group to strike an armored car carrying $20 million. As the "takers" carefully plot their strategy and draw nearer to exacting the grand heist, a reckless police officer (Matt Dillon) inches closer to apprehending the criminals.

People living secret lives are confronted by love and betrayal in this drama. Johnny (Johnny Ferro) is an American student who has enrolled at an art school in the Bahamas. While Johnnys work reveals impressive technique, his instructors feel his work lacks passion and he needs to get in better touch with his emotions. What they dont know is Johnny has a secret -- hes gay, but hasnt come out of the closet, and doesnt believe its prudent in the Bahamas, where homophobia is widespread. In search of inspiration, Johnny takes a trip to the island of Eleuthera, and on the ferry he meets Romeo (Stephen Tyrone Williams), a handsome local man with whom he strikes up a friendship. Before long, Johnny and Romeo are more than friends, but like Johnny, Romeo isnt willing to open up to most people about his sexuality, allowing his mother to believe hes straight. Meanwhile, also spending some time in Eleuthera is Lena (Margaret Laurena Kemp), the wife of Ralph Mackey (Ralph Ford) a minister who is outspoken in his opposition to gay rights. Lena has taken part in her husbands campaigns to demand more laws against homosexual conduct, but shes begun to have her doubts -- shes been given a sexually transmitted disease from her husband, who refuses to say how he contacted it, and wonders if its time she moved on with her life.

Dean Pereira and Cindy Heller Pereira are a young, working class married couple - Dean currently working as a painter, and Cindy working as a nurse in a medical clinic - with a young daughter named Frankie. Despite their relatively tender ages, they are both ravaged by the life theyve eked out together and by the experiences theyve had leading into their marriage. Dean, a high school drop out, comes from a broken home, where he never really had a mother figure. He never saw himself getting married or having a family despite falling in love at first sight with Cindy. He doesnt have any professional ambition beyond his current work - which he enjoys since he feels he can knock off a beer at 8 oclock in the morning without it affecting his work - although Cindy believes he has so much more potential in life. Cindy also comes from a dysfunctional family, with her own mother and father not setting an example of a harmonious married or family life...

The plot follows the Mystery Inc. gang as school lets out for summer and everyone gets a job at Daphnes uncles country club right on Lake Erie. Only, in this town, theres a legend of a frog-monster and a vengeful witch that scares the locals. Needless to say, the teen sleuths decide to take on the case- stalwart Fred, plucky Daphne, brainy Velma, fearful Shaggy and hungry Scooby.

Bear Family is no stranger to ambitious box sets, but theyve never attempted anything as monumental as ...Next Stop Is Vietnam: The War on Record 1961-2008, a staggering 13-disc aural history of the U.S. entanglement in Nam. The size of the set is suitably weighty for the topic, and the leisurely length allows explorations of plenty of curious detours -- left turns that wind up telling more about how the war cut into the fabric of American society than the well-known anthems that anchor this set. Many of the usual suspects surface -- Dylan setting the stage with "Masters of War," SSgt. Barry Sadler celebrating "The Ballad of the Green Berets," Phil Ochs refusing to march and the Fugs killing for peace, Country Joe & the Fish protesting with "I-Feel-Like-Im Fixin-to-Die Rag" and John Lennon following suit with "Give Peace a Chance," Merle Haggard firing back with "Okie from Muskogee" and "The Fightin Side of Me," Marvin Gaye wondering "Whats Goin On" -- but their appearances almost feels like historical context for what surrounds them, much like how the speeches and news reports scattered throughout the box explain the situation. Whats really interesting about the set is what exists in the margins, the answer records to these anthems, along with their parodies and rip-offs, the reactionary country singles from the late 60s, songs recorded by soldiers in the field, the many reflections on the war written in the 80s and 90s, the sticky sentimental recitations by children from the pre-protest 60s, folk laments to POWs sitting alongside an ode to "Johnny Rambo," Bob Segers "The Ballad of the Yellow Berets," even Hank Williams, Jr.s "Dont Give Us a Reason," where he taunts Saddam Hussein during Desert Storm, all as a payback for Nam. Much of this is not well known and much of it isnt exactly compelling outside of the context of this set -- and it has to be said that a handful of the 300-plus tracks arent interesting within this context either, particularly the odd inclusion of three 2001 cuts from Paul Revere & the Raiders -- but the whole point of ...Next Stop Is Vietnam is context, how by housing all these conflicting voices in one very heavy box Bear Family winds up with a testament to how the war deeply affected Americans for generations. Not exactly easy listening -- nothing of this size is -- but it is a monument, capturing the entire messy divisive legacy of Vietnam in a way no book, documentary, or movie ever has. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
