Before hitting his stride as a hugely successful pop artist, it turns out Joel put in time with psychedelic rockers (Lost Souls), pseudo R&B players (the Hassles) and a prog-metal duo (Attila). Its all here. What this collection reveals is that despite his fairly consistent mainstream output the singer never stopped experimenting. There is a reggae version of "Only The Good Die Young," a soulful reading of Leonard Cohens "Light as the Breeze," supper club jazz with Duke Ellingtons "In A Sentimental Mood," even classical interludes from his later years. Theres room to grumble about what did and didnt make the cut, particularly with the stray album cuts, but this is a great testament to the range and restless spirit of the songwriter.
